15.07.13 – day five
The alarm was set to 5:30 and 6:00 AM.. It was obvious that we couldn’t wake up.. The biggest reason was that Chris room is partly in the mountain and with no windows, so it is always dark in the room and I thought that it is night, pressed the alarm and fell asleep again. Chris did wake us up when he went to job and it was very good, because we would have slept for a looong time. Around 8 AM we started our way back home.
We went back through Berlin, because didn’t want to make all the crazy driving as on our way here. Few medium traffic jams at Berlin, because of – it’s Monday. But despite that we got fast on highway and we were on our way to the border of Germany/Poland.
On the way back I wanted to make small experiment and drive with less fuel consumption as I could. Haven’t calculated all the consumption and money things jet, but.. maybe with time.
Way through Poland was quite calm. Only few minor accidents, police – at all the same spots, that they were on our way to Dresden. This time one police car was the same and one of police officers smiled and waved.. And a question – what to do? Wave or beeter not?
The clock is ticking close to 00:00, when we were getting close to the border of Poland/Lithuania. Couldn’t go too fast because of unmarked police cars and my desire to save fuel. But the biggest curious was when we got in Lithuania. One car drove out of the gas tank just right after us. I didn’t see what was that car, but it was holding close, but far enough not to see what that car was. It was tailing us all the way till the city of Kaunas and then after that suddenly just stopped, turned around and went other way and then I was sure for 99%, that it was a police car. The only thing was – they didn’t know the reason why I was driving so slowly and calm – fuel economy..
And the calm driving was succesfull – at least for me, because I set a new personal record with this Firebird. 261 miles with one gas tank. Befora that the biggest was 212 miles. As this slow driving was realy calm, the slumber started to sneak on from behind so we started to make stops from time to time to stretch and make small sprints.
Till the border of Lithuania/Latvia – no more surprises. Few nervous drivers with Estonian and Latvian registration plates, funny truck drivers and few police.
My experiment ended in the city of Bauska. Why? Because that was the place when I filled up my tank. And because there was a police car in the city. I don’t know if they wanted to stop us or not, but as I didn’t speed, they didn’t have any reason.. They just stared at me driving so slow with this kind of car… If my calculation was precise then I had left around 4 liters in the tank.
The last 50 km were the longest.. As always after such a logn trips. We arrived at around 5:00 AM. And straight to bed. Goodnight.
Next trip? Next summer? Don’t know jet, but know one thing for sure – will need some new tires.
